Match Preview Eden Hazard Chelsea 2018-19Chelsea came out on top when the sides met last August – with Marcos Alonso’s late strike securing a 3-2 victory at Stamford Bridge – but while they might hold a psychological edge over the Gunners, Sarri is anticipating an entirely different experience on Saturday.”In August [against Arsenal], it was a different match,” the former Napoli coach said. “They have changed in the last seven or eight matches, but we learned that they have really very dangerous movements in the offensive phase without the ball.”I think we can be dangerous against this opponent but we have to defend with a very high level of application and attention for 95 minutes.”The Gunners come into the game a wounded animal and their defeat against West Ham means that they have registered just two wins in their last five matches in all competitions. With an FA Cup clash against Manchester United up next as well as an encounter with Manchester City in the league on the horizon, they will be eager to build their confidence and gather some momentum with a home win. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)USC’s football program announced this afternoon a decision on the Trojans’ head coach, Clay Helton, following the end of the regular season.Helton, in somewhat of a surprise, will be returning to the sideline in 2019.USC athletic director Lynn Swann announced the decision with a statement.“Clay Helton is our head coach and he will continue to be our head coach,” Swann said in a statement. Here’s the full release:“Clay Helton is our head coach and he will continue to be our head coach.”USC AD Lynn Swann explains his decision in a letter to the #TrojanFamily. #FightOn pic.twitter.com/wjr1VMv28w— USC Trojans (@USC_Athletics) November 25, 2018This is a surprising decision, but not a shocking one. ESPN’s Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit hinted at the possibility of Helton returning during their broadcast of the USC-Notre Dame game on Saturday night.USC would reportedly have to give Helton a gigantic buyout if the Trojans were to fire him, too, and giving him at least one more season would bring that number down.Still, there will be plenty of USC fans upset with the decision to bring Helton back. Several top boosters had reportedly been pressuring the Trojans to make a change.last_img read more

2Bar’s Small-Barrel Bourbon Tastes Like a 12-Year After Just a Few Months

first_img The Best American Liqueur The Manual Spirit Awards 2019: The Best Craft Liquor Made in America Getting to Know Rhum Agricole, Rum’s Grassy Sibling Swill is our bi-monthly column dedicated to liquor, wine, beer, and every other delicious dram that falls under the broader umbrella of booze. But it’s more than just tasting notes scribbled on a cocktail napkin — Swill is about getting outside of your comfort zone, trying new things, and exploring the big, wide world of libations. One week you might catch us halfway through a bottle of single-malt scotch, and the week after that we might be buzzing on some Ugandan moonshine made from bananas. This column is just one big boozy adventure, so grab yourself a glass and join us for another round.Ever have one of those awkward moments where you think she’s 18, but come to find out she’s waaay younger? I mean, I’m usually a pretty good at judging age, but a couple weekends ago I experienced this exact situation — with a bottle of bourbon whiskey.I was at a trade show for Northwestern distillers, at a booth for a distillery called 2Bar Spirits. After a first sip that left me feeling weak in the knees, I asked the guy behind the counter how long it was aged for. His reply? Thirteen months.I almost spit out my drink. Here I was, getting all googly-eyed over a glass of hooch that tasted old enough to vote, and this guy tells me it’s just barely over a year old. My mind was blown. What kind of black magic was this?Turns out, it wasn’t black magic at all; it was just 2Bar’s unorthodox aging process. Not only do these guys mash, ferment, and distill their booze from the ground up using locally-grown grains; they also age it in smaller barrels — just 15 gallons instead of the usual 55 gallon variety that most distillers use. What’s the advantage of aging in smaller casks? Well, aside from the fact that you can carry more of ’em on a forklift, smaller-volume barrels tend to speed up the aging process and help the booze develop flavors an accelerated rate. The reason bourbon makers leave their elixir in barrels for 8 to 12 years is because when you’re aging 55-gallons of whiskey, it takes a long time for the booze to extract tannins and vanillins from the charred oak. With a smaller barrel though, you get a higher surface-area-to-liquor ratio, so the chemical reactions needed to mellow the alcohol and develop the flavor profile occur more rapidly. Therefore, all those wonderful oaky flavors that would take years to achieve in a full-size 55-gallon barrel can be achieved in just a few months. Now to be fair, 2Bar isn’t the only distillery that does this — but in my humble opinion they’re doing it better than a lot of distilleries that are decades older. The company is barely two years old, and already they’re making some of the best young bourbon I’ve had in recent memory. I can’t wait to see what they’re producing a few years from now.Go find yourself a bottle. Immediately. You’ll be blown away. What is Bourbon? Canada to lose jobs growth thanks to budgets costcutting PBO

OTTAWA — The federal government’s most recent “jobs and growth” budget will wind up costing Canada both jobs and economic growth over the next few years, the Parliamentary Budget Officer says in a new report. The PBO’s latest estimates on the impact of the 2013 budget handed down in March show the cumulative impact will be to reduce economic growth by 0.12% and job creation by 14,000 by 2016.Government spending will act as a drag on economic growth, rather than a stimulusCombining the latest budget measures with the cutbacks unveiled in 2012 means there will be 62,000 fewer jobs in 2016, rising to 67,000 fewer in 2017, than might otherwise be the case without the cuts. The PBO cautions the estimates do not mean the cutbacks will result in a loss of jobs, but that employment will be lower than it might have been absent the measures. In economic speak, that means that government spending will act as a drag on economic growth, rather than a stimulus. The report, released on the same day the government will table legislation to enact the budget, notes that revised spending levels in the latest economic blueprint will have a minimal positive impact on jobs — actually a statistically meaningless net gain of one this year and next — but the longer-term effect is fewer jobs in 2015, 2016 and 2017.The report also projects that the economy will grow at a slower rate than Finance Minister Jim Flaherty counts on in the March budget — by 1.5 and 1.9% this year and next, compared with the budget estimate of 1.6 and 2.5% respectively — but this will not undermine Ottawa’s plans to balance to budget in 2015.In fact, the PBO calculates that the government will report an even bigger surplus — $3.7-billion rather than $800-million — in the critical 2015-16 year when the Harper government is due to face the electorate in a fall vote. That’s because it believes Flaherty has built-in a bigger-than-needed fund for downside economic risk, and because of rising employment insurance premiums.“Based on PBO’s current economic outlook and measures and revisions … PBO projects a significant improvement in the government’s budgetary balance over the medium term,” the report states.“PBO projects a budgetary deficit of $25-billion in 2012-13, which improves over the projection horizon, resulting in a budgetary surplus of $7.6-billion in 2017-18.”The lower growth profile will result in unemployment remaining above seven per cent until 2016 and the Bank of Canada maintaining its current low interest rate setting until the spring of 2015.The report is the first major analysis of the economy and government finances under interim PBO head Sonia L’Heureux, who replaced Kevin Page last month. The new breakdown will likely both be welcomed and ruffle some feathers inside the government, which has been critical of Page’s work for years. While the estimate of job losses will grate, the PBO broadly agrees with Flaherty’s contention he will be in position to balance the budget in a few years. In fact, once the budget risk adjustment is removed, the report says be about US$2.5-billion further in the black by then. The Canadian Press read more

IRS employee convicted of wiretapping for snooping on bosss Outlook

first_imgWhat happens if you set up a rule in Microsoft Outlook to forward messages sent to someone else to your own email account when the content of those messages mention your name? Well, it depends, but in the case of one IRS employee, it’s got him convicted of violating federal wiretapping laws. Here’s what went down. David Szymuszkiewicz, a former IRS worker and a man whose last name we won’t go through the nightmare of typing again, was afraid for his job. He’d recently had his license suspended for drunk driving, and considering his job at the IRS required him to drive to the homes of delinquent tax payers, that was a problem.David’s solution? He snuck into his boss’s office and set up a rule under his boss’s Outlook that would forward him any emails that mentioned his name.Smart! Except dumb: the rule was quickly sniffed out, and David fired for the transgression… but because this is the government, it soon went much, much further than that. How far? He was brought up on charges. But which charges? Was he charged under the Wiretap Act for intercepting messages (a far worse crime) or the Store Communications Act for copying them? Both are debatable, but ultimately, Dave was convicted of the former, yet still seems to have garnered the judge’s compassion… he only got 18 months probation.Honestly, we’re glad to hear it. Sounds like Dave might be prone to stupidity, but rotting in jail for what was likely intended to be a bit of preservative eaves dropping is pushing things.Read more at Ars Technicalast_img read more
