Huddersfield boss Wagner: We must forget about table, results, whateverby Paul Vegas10 months agoSend to a friendShare the loveHuddersfield Town boss David Wagner has urged his players to focus only on themselves ahead of facing Manchester United.Wagner’s team having won only once at the John Smith’s Stadium this season, scoring four goals in 10 games. He said: “We have to make ourselves independent from what is around us, from the table, results, whatever.”We are exactly where everybody predicted us so this makes no sense to think about it and get affected by it.”We are only able to collect points and to be competitive if we perform on our highest level. This is what we’ve done in recent weeks and this is what we’ve done in the second half (against Southampton), where we looked competitive.”In the first half we didn’t perform at our level, we were not competitive and we were 2-0 down.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

Match Preview Chelsea came out on top when the sides met last August – with Marcos Alonso’s late strike securing a 3-2 victory at Stamford Bridge – but while they might hold a psychological edge over the Gunners, Sarri is anticipating an entirely different experience on Saturday.”In August [against Arsenal], it was a different match,” the former Napoli coach said. “They have changed in the last seven or eight matches, but we learned that they have really very dangerous movements in the offensive phase without the ball.”I think we can be dangerous against this opponent but we have to defend with a very high level of application and attention for 95 minutes.”The Gunners come into the game a wounded animal and their defeat against West Ham means that they have registered just two wins in their last five matches in all competitions. With an FA Cup clash against Manchester United up next as well as an encounter with Manchester City in the league on the horizon, they will be eager to build their confidence and gather some momentum with a home win. The worlds of sport and politics frequently intersect, with most politicians keenly aware of the prestige that can accompany even the most perfunctory association with athletic glory.Conservative MP Boris Johnson, who could very well be the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, is someone who fully understands the value of sport as a vehicle for acquiring political capital. While rugby is his first love, having played for Balliol College during his time at Oxford, he has also displayed an interest in football, infamously flattening former Germany international Maurizio Gaudino in a 2006 charity match. Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? He was also involved in England’s unsuccessful bid to host the 2018 World Cup and, during his time as mayor of London, developed a relationship with a number of clubs. So does he support a team? When it comes to club allegiance, Johnson is a classic fence-sitter and refuses to nail his colours to the mast.In 2015, mid-way through his second term as mayor of London, he explained that he his sympathies were spread across the capital.”I support all of the London teams,” Johnson said, before adding that his children were actually Newcastle United fans.Of course, such an answer is politically expedient and unsurprising. It is also fair to say that the support is merely cursory, given the deep rivalries that exist among many of the London clubs. In the absence of any further clarification the most we can say is that Johnson hopes the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, West Ham and Crystal Palace do well. What we can say for sure though is that Johnson does support the England national team and has attended matches at Wembley, sitting alongside political friends and foes to cheer on the Three Lions.Even though he was fiercely critical of Vladimir Putin and appeared to back a boycott of the 2018 World Cup, it did not stop him from expressing his support for Gareth Southgate’s team. It’s coming home 🦁🦁🦁 🏴 #Proud #ENGSWE— Boris Johnson (@BorisJohnson) July 7, 2018Indeed, he wrote to British embassies across the world to urge them to fly the St George’s flag from their buildings ahead of the last-16 victory over Colombia. Then, when England defeated Sweden in the quarter-final, he readily joined the chorus of fans who cheerfully declared, “It’s coming home” – a line from the popular song by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds.
Brazil scraped into the Copa America semi-finals with a thrilling penalty shoot-out win over Paraguay on Thursday.Frustrated for long periods in Porto Alegre, the hosts were forced to penalties after a 0-0 draw at the Arena do Gremio.Paraguay managed to see out the final half-hour with 10 men after Fabian Balbuena was sent off for denying Roberto Firmino an obvious goalscoring opportunity. He’s thrown for nearly 300 yards and 3 touchdowns in the game against Iowa State today.NFL analyst Matt Miller weighed in on Murray’s recent success by asking a scout if there are now any concerns about Mayfield.“I text an area scout, ‘Does watching Kyler Murray make you wonder how much of Baker’s success was coaching?’ Reply: ‘I’d be shitting bricks right now.’”I text an area scout, “Does watching Kyler Murray make you wonder how much of Baker’s success was coaching?”Reply: “I’d be shitting bricks right now.”— Matt Miller (@nfldraftscout) September 15, 2018Mayfield saw this tweet. USC won 38-17. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)The USC football head coaching job hasn’t opened up yet, but many are expecting it to following the Trojans’ loss to UCLA on Saturday afternoon.USC fell below .500 with the loss on Saturday, now needing to upset Notre Dame next weekend in order to get bowl eligibility. The Clay Helton era in Los Angeles appears to be coming to an end. Most are expecting USC to make a change in head coach following the season.Who should USC target if a change is made? One college football analyst has made a suggestion.“If I’m them, I call James Franklin, Kyle Whittingham and Matt Campbell and do whatever it takes to get one of those three,” USA TODAY’s Dan Wolken tweeted.Plaschke raises the point that will be so crucial here: USC needs to look outside the family. Whittingham, meanwhile, could be interested in making the jump from Utah. And Campbell is certainly deserving of a bigger job, though he’s also being linked to NFL openings.Stay tuned.
