Great weekend for Apoel as champs move to top of table

first_imgApoel moved to the top of the table for the first time this season after their 2-0 defeat of bottom placed Ermis Aradippou and AEL’s heavy home defeat to Anorthosis. Two more results went Apoel’s way as Apollon could only draw against Pafos FC and AEK lost at home to Nea Salamina. In the two other games Alki moved away from the relegation zone with a hard-fought win over Doxa Katokopias while Enosis and Omonia had to settle for a point each, something that suits neither side.Anorthosis seem to enjoy their games at the Tsirion stadium as on both their visits this season against Apollon and AEK they came away with maximum points despite being clear underdogs.Jurgen Streppel’s side rode their luck in the opening half hour of the game but once they took the lead through a deflected Michal Ďuriš shot seven minutes before the break they grew in confidence and were rarely tested in the second half.Beka Mikeltadze doubled the score for the visitors in the 55th minute and with AEL pushing players forward Duris added a third in the closing stages of the contest. AEL can consider themselves rather unfortunate with the margin of the score but at the end they paid the price for individual mistakes at the back and their profligacy in front of goal.Without dazzling with their display Apoel defeated Ermis Aradippou 2-0 thanks to a Malon own goal on the stroke of half time and a Nuno Morais strike.Few people expected the champions to be topping the table at the end of the year after a torrid start but their revival under Paolo Tramezzani continues and in a matter of a few weeks they have become favourites to retain their title.Pafos FC continued their impressive displays against the top sides with a 1-1 draw against Apollon, leaving AEL as the only team to have defeated them so far this season.Pafos FC can consider themselves unlucky not have picked up all three points as they ran Apollon rugged in the second half with Angulo and Nemec twice failing to find the net from excellent positions.AEK failed to build on their recent success against Apollon and lost 1-0 to Nea Salamina at the Arena stadium. It was a cruel result for AEK who dominated the game and could have won comfortably were it not for an outstanding Robert Vezelofski in Salamina’s goal. The only goal of the game was netted by Nea Salamina’s towering forward Kinglsey in the 16th minute.A goal midway into the second half from Acosta gave Alki the three points against Doxa Katokopias which moved them for the first time this season outside the relegation zone.Spoliaric had given Alki the lead but the league’s top scorer Sadik brought the game level just before the break.Omonia took the lead against Enosis in the 77th minute through Lopez but for the seventh consecutive game since manager Anastasiou took charge they have been unable to hang onto the lead.Five minutes from the end Enoch salvaged a deserved point for the home side who are battling to avoid the drop.last_img
